Israel practices 'apartheid' - Rep. Betty McCollum

eop 4oct2018 1The highlight of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights conference that concluded Sunday in St. Paul was a speech by U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN) that was that very rare and brave thing in mainstream US politics: an unapologetic endorsement of Palestinian human rights.

McCollum denounced Israel’s "brutal" "cruel" policy of detaining and torturing children, which she has sought to sanction through groundbreaking legislation that would end U.S. aid that supports those practices. She said that it is not anti-Semitic to criticize Israel: "why can't I hold a foreign government accountable for how they abuse an entire population of people under their control?"

Palestine sues US at international court over Jerusalem embassy

eop 4oct2018 2Palestine filed a complaint against the United States with the United Nations top court over Washington's decision to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

In a statement issued on Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) said Palestine contends the embassy's relocation is in breach of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Israel Defends Interrogations Of Left-Wing Activists At Airport

Israeli authorities are defending a recent series of interrogations of left-wing activists at Israel's airport and borders, saying the practice is necessary to prevent violence and terrorism.
But a prominent civil rights advocate in the country called the government's justification "shameful and dangerous."

In recent months, several critics of the Israeli government - most prominently U.S. journalist Peter Beinart - complained that Israeli border agents questioned them about their pro-Palestinian activism and political beliefs. The testimonies made headlines and rekindled a debate about whether Israel is stifling dissent and liberal views.
