The YMCA-YWCA Joint Advocacy Initiative issues this bi-weekly newsletter to keep you updated on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories related to the Israeli occupation.
The fight for Jerusalem: Palestinians will not be subdued
Five Palestinians were killed and nearly 1,000 others were wounded within ten days in Jerusalem, beginning July 14. Commenting on this alarming figure, the Israeli rights group, B'Tselem accused the Israeli army of "sweeping disregard" for Palestinian lives in Occupied East Jerusalem. Palestinians, however, remained undeterred, continuing their protests in the city.
Aside from its geographic centrality and spiritual significance for Palestinians, the powerful symbolism of Jerusalem unites all Palestinians regardless of religion, region or ideology.
Transferring' Palestinian citizens of Israel to a Palestinian state goes from outrage to Netanyahu policy
The Israeli press reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has now adopted an idea that had been beyond the pale: transfer– stripping Israeli Palestinians of citizenship without their OK and making them citizens of another country, all of course on a religious-ethnic basis.
A Palestinian lawmaker in Israel's parliament accused Netanyahu of endorsing a "war crime."
The news is that in talks with Trump administration officials, Netanyahu has reportedly endorsed the idea of swapping portions of Israeli land containing Palestinian communities for portions of occupied land in the West Bank containing Jewish settlers as a means to establish a Palestinian state.
Democrats Join Republicans In Bill Criminalizing Speech Critical Of Israel
With Trump as president, it is easy to forget how utterly hopeless many Congressional Democrats are, including many who look like progressives.
The best indicator of Democratic corruption is its slavishness toward the lobby that is to them what the National Rifle Association is to the GOP: the Israel lobby (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and its satellite organizations).
The latest evidence of that slavishness comes in the form of growing support among Democrats in both Houses for legislation sponsored by Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) and co-sponsored by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer that would make it a felony for Americans to support the international boycott against Israel, commonly known as BDS. Anyone guilty of violating the prohibitions will face a minimum civil penalty of $250,000 and a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and 20 years in prison.
